EAR
EAR as project summates the lived musical experience of artist Anka Raczynska. The letters EAR refer to Anka’s initials at birth, holding a duality of playful humor and fated commitment. This project is about how sounds contain the energetic information of their sources, about how Anka was born 12 days after Arthur Russell died, about how her house felt very clearly haunted and how that affected the sounds she made and captured. Pervading each EAR record is a desire to find an immediacy, “what you hear is what you get”. The records contain juxtaposed found sounds and voice memos, pointing toward the transcendent in the overlooked. informing her practice, Anka has spent the past several years committing to a liberatory world vision. She has learned through this process that one’s own power might be terrifying to face, but confidence reveals the resilience and interconnection we all share. EAR confronts the embarrassment that comes with sincerity, for music is sacred in its ubiquity. Her work is influenced by her politics, as well as video games, choreography, radio shows, and public access television. To paraphrase the legendary personality that was Coca Crystal, “If I can’t dance (or play games) you can keep your revolution.”
